Sanga clarifies SB's golf club claim

Former cricket captain - Kumar Sangakkara has clarified a claim citing that he had requested authorities to lease out the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club for 20 years.

“The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club for which I have extremely high regard belongs to its members and the leasing of which has never arisen even as a thought in my mind let alone in conversation,” Sangakkara had told media.

Yesterday, former parliamentarian S.B. Dissanayake claimed that the former captain had discussed a proposal to lease out the golf club to attract one million golfers.

However, Sangakkara clarified that he had only submitted a proposal for a sports tourism-related project, in response to a newspaper advertisement, that too on a plot of land close to the Nuwara Eliya Golf Course.

It is this project the former MP SB Dissanayake may have alluded to, he had added.

“I was asked some weeks ago by telephone if I had submitted such a proposal some years ago to which I answered yes. I also stated that I was awaiting the final decision by the relevant authority... “The project proposal will be available at the relevant government authority for anyone to understand what it includes” Sangakkara had further said.
