Sri Lanka thrash Afghanistan to level the series 1-1

Sri Lanka secured a resounding victory over Afghanistan, defeating them by a commanding margin of 132 runs in the second One Day International (ODI) match. This win brought the series to an even 1-1, intensifying the anticipation for the decisive third ODI.

Having won the toss, Sri Lanka opted to bat first, aiming to set a challenging target for Afghanistan. The opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne provided a solid foundation for the Sri Lankan innings, forging a steady partnership.

Kusal Mendis played a splendid knock, scoring a remarkable 78 runs off 75 balls. This innings marked a return to form for Mendis, who had been struggling with single-digit scores in ODIs recently. The momentum continued as the middle order Dhananjaya De Silva, Dasun Shanaka & Wanindu Hasaranga showcased excellent stroke play and aggressive batting. The Sri Lankan batsmen exuded confidence, regularly finding the boundaries and effectively rotating the strike.

With their collective efforts, Sri Lanka posted an imposing total of 320 runs on the scoreboard, highlighting their batting prowess and setting a daunting target for Afghanistan to chase.

In response, Afghanistan faced a challenging task of pursuing the target set by Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan bowler Dushmantha Chameera, making a comeback after an injury, bowled a fiery opening spell and claimed the wicket of opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, providing an early breakthrough for his team.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers continued to exert pressure on the Afghan batting lineup, maintaining a disciplined line and length.
