A special luxury intercity express train will run between Colombo Fort and Kandy every weekend from tomorrow (Oct. 1), Transport and Mass Media Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.
While addressing the media yesterday focusing on "Future Plans for Railways and New Routes" at the Government Information Department, the Minister said people can reserve their seats ahead of their travel plans.
The train leaves Fort Railway Station at 6.30 am every weekend and will reach Kandy at 9.18 am. On the same day, the train will leave Kandy at 4.50 pm and reach Fort at 7.40 pm.
The train consists of four first-class air-conditioned compartments with 44 seats and three second-class compartments with the same number of seats.
The first class fare will be Rs. 2,000 and a second class will be Rs. 1,500 - the fares mentioned above is for one-way journey to Kandy/Fort, the Minister said.
On its journey to Kandy, the train will stop at Gampaha (7.04 am), Veyangoda (7.15 am), Peradeniya (9.03 am), Sarasavi Uyana (9.12 am) before reaching its destination Kandy (9.18 am). The total journey consumes two hours and 48 minutes.
He further said that another luxury train service will also be introduced to Anuradhapura in the near future and it will be announced in due course. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
