The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association has decided to withdraw passenger transport buses from services island wide, after the conclusion of the on-going GCE Advanced Level Examination.
Wijeratne attributed the decision to the many grave challenges faced in the passenger transport services sector due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the failure of transport authorities to direct any attention to said concerns.
He explained that only around 50-60% of buses are currently in operation, adding there is a sharp decrease in the number of commuters as well.
Wijeratne said several proposals were presented by the association for the protection of passengers and bus employees alike; however transport officials had not responded or supported the proposals.
He stressed the only reason buses have not withdrawn from services thus far is in consideration of children facing the A/Level exam.
The Chairman revealed that buses are making minimal income amidst the prevailing circumstances.
