The UNP is said to have taken a decision to cancel the membership of the provincial councillors who attended the Samagi Janabalawegaya inauguration ceremony held at Nelum Pokuna yesterday under the patronage of Sajith Premadasa.
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam to immediately remove those who attended the Samagi Janabalawegaya event and appoint young new members to these positions.
There are around 2000 Local Government Councillors around the country representing the UNP.
Meanwhile, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has summoned all party organisers to Colombo for a meeting today (03) in preparation for contesting the elections.
The meeting is scheduled to be held at the UNP Headquarters Sirikotha.
The UNP nomination board had met yesterday to formulate the nomination lists.
Meanwhile, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken a decision last night (02) to restructure the party.
Accordingly, it has been decided to relieve MP Harin Fernando from his responsibility of handling the Lanka Estate Workers Association and hand it over to MP Navin Dissanayake and V. Radhakrishnan.
It is also reported that MPs Thalatha Athukorale and Chandrani Bandara would be removed from their responsibility of handling the Lak Vanitha Peramuna and hand its responsibility over to UNP Yapahuwa Organiser Achini Lokubandara.
The handling of the Youth Front has been handed over to MP Kavinda Jayawardena.
The media handling for the UNP has been entrusted to MP Rajitha Senaratne, Ruwan Wijewardena and Prof. Ashu Marasinghe.
Wickremesinghe has appointed them to carry out a short term and long term media campaign for the party.
In order to implement these decisions, a sudden UNP Working Committee meeting has been planned for tomorrow (04).
It is also reported that some UNP MPs who had attended the Samagi Janabalawegaya inauguration ceremony at Nelum Pokuna last morning had come to Sirikotha last evening and met with UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
J.D. Alawathuwala, Gayantha Karunatillake, Sujith Sanjaya Perera, Wijepala Hettiarachchi and Mujibur Rahuman were among those who had met Wickremesinghe last evening.
