Factories under BoI to be closed indefinitely

Minister of Industrial Export and Investment Promotion - Prasanna Ranatunga has ordered that all factories under the Board of Investment (BoI) of Sri Lanka be closed until further notice.

Noting that a large number of factory workers are currently confined to their boarding places due to curfew, the minister has directed the Chairman of the BoI to immediately implement a programme to send these workers to their villages under the supervision of the army and police.

The minister was speaking during a meeting with BoI officials, and factory owner representatives in Katunayake.

Earlier, co-secretary of the Free Trade Zone and General Services Employees Union Anton Marcus had expressed deep concern over the plight of thousands of factory workers in the Katunayake - Biyagama - Seethawaka Free Trade Zone.

He had stated that over 25,000 employees of the FTZ were confined to their boarding places and unable to return to their villages after curfew was imposed.
