Two governors asked to resign !

President Maithripala Sirisena is said to have asked two of the Governors to resign from their posts.

This is over the severe criticism levelled against the two governors by the SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara and Mahinda Amaraweera.

However, when contacted by us a Presidential Secretariat spokesman said that he was not aware of the President asking any of the governors to resign, but said that it was true that Jayasekara and Amaraweera had criticised two of the governors.

He also noted that the two governors under criticism have been those who have worked without giving prominence to political agendas.

SLFP candidate Maithri

The SLFP General Secretary said that it had been decided at the party working committee meeting that current President Maithripala Sirisena would be the next Presidential candidate of the party.

Accordingly, it is also reported that several UNP members are also planning on joining the President.

According to party internal sources, with the rebellion building up within the UNP to propose Sajith Premadasa as the party’s presidential candidate, internal disputes have arisen within the UNP.

UNP Deputy Leader, Minister Ravi Karunanayake has openly protested against the move to field Sajith Premadasa as the presidential candidate.

Addressing the media, he levelled criticism regarding this move on his way out after the Cabinet meeting yesterday.
