The Leftist Parties belonging to the Joint Opposition are to make a final decision today (21) over whether not they will nominate Dinesh Gunawardena as their Presidential candidate.
The representatives of the leftists parties are expected to meet this evening in Battaramulla, where they will discuss the upcoming elections including the Presidential election.
With leading Leftist figures, including Vasudeva Nanayakarra M.P., having expressed reservations over the possibility of Gotabaya Rajapaksa contesting the election, it is widely expected that they will nominate an alternative figure.
Dinesh Gunawardena was the de-facto leader of the Joint Opposition in Parliament and currently serves as the Chief Opposition Whip.
Divisions continue to emerge over the candidacy for the Presidential election with several key figures being touted as possibilities including Chaml Rajapaksa and Kumara Welgama.
It has also been reported that Maithripala Sirisena is considering a joint alliance with the SLPP in the hope of securing the candidacy.
With the ongoing confusion over the identity of the candidate, today’s meeting by the Leftist parties will be watched with keen interest from all sides.
