If UNP’s only choice is Ranil, I’ll agree: President.

The President has reportedly agreed to reappoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister during a discussion held between the President and several UNP members yesterday (11).

Matters such as Mahinda Rajapaksa failing to secure majority in Parliament, Mahinda Rajapaksa losing two motions of no-confidence and majority in Parliament expressing support for Ranil Wickremesinghe have been discussed at the above discussion.

In addition, the interim injunction issued by the Appeal Court restraining Mahinda Rajapaksa and his Cabinet from function in their respective posts, has also been discussed during this discussion.

UNP members who participated in the meeting had pointed out that the UNP doesn’t have any other options at the moment and is able to demonstrate that Ranil Wickremesinghe, who acted as the legitimate Prime Minister until October 26, has the confidence of Parliament.

Furthermore, they had stressed that the UNP’s only nominee for the post of Prime Minister is Ranil Wickremesinghe and that decision will not be changed.

In response, the President had stated: “If you don’t understand what I’m saying and your only choice is Ranil, I will reinstate him.”

The motion to express confidence in Ranil Wickremesinghe, which was presented to the Parliament today (12), was passed with 117 votes in favor of Ranil Wickremesinghe. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) also supported it.
