New Early Childhood Development Centers in Mullaitivu to Celebrate ChildFund Korea’s 70th Anniversary

ChildFund Sri Lanka will declare open two new early childhood development centers (ECDs) in Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka on 14th and 15th August 2018.

The opening of the new constructions for young children will coincide with the 70th anniversary of ChildFund Korea who is funding the Early Childhood Education in Mullaitivu project.

The key focus of the project is to improve access of children including children with disabilities to good quality holistic ECD services that facilitate child development during key milestones. It includes preparing children aged 3-5 years in the Mullaitivu district for school readiness through a number of activities that support early childhood development. It also focusses on increasing awareness on good nutrition practices for parents and caregivers and training for teachers. The project also endeavors to enhance the knowledge of parents on the importance of ECD education and improves their participation in the development of ECD centers.

In taking into consideration the psychological affects in a community in the aftermath of war, the project also has a psychosocial counselling component for parents and children plus training for teachers to enable them to identify children who maybe experiencing emotional problems or have disabilities.

In order to encourage attendance at ECD centers and develop access to good quality ECD centers,  ChildFund Sri Lanka with funding from ChildFund Korea is constructing 2 new ECD centers and making 1 major renovation and 10 minor renovations to existing ECD centers.

Where Our Friendship began:

The relationship between ChildFund Korea and Sri Lanka began in 2002 through the initiation of a sponsorship program for children in Kataragama, in Southern Sri Lanka. ChildFund Korea’s support gradually extended to Karuwalagaswewa in Puttalam, in North Western Sri Lanka, where the organization provided housing for some 50 families and a child resource center to a community that was frequently affected in attacks by elephants. It later extended its support to other parts of the island through a number of different projects.

Mr. Won Man Jung, Vice President of ChildFund Korea:

“I am overwhelmed with emotion standing here in Mullaitivu celebrating our 70th anniversary with you all. ChildFund Korea has been working with ChildFund Sri Lanka for many years and to celebrate our 70th anniversary, we launched a project in Mullaitivu to support 16 ECD centers to promote early childhood education and development in 2017.”

Mrs. Katherine Manik, Country Director of ChildFund Sri Lanka:

“This journey with sponsors and donors from ChildFund Korea has been a long and successful one that has yielded a powerful partnership between the two.”

“As an organization we are very proud and happy to have been able to secure the resources to construct these schools and gift them to the children of Sri Lanka in celebration of the 70th anniversary of ChildFund Korea. We wish ChildFund Korea all the best and success in the future.”
