Sandya opposes presidential pardon to Gnanasara Thera

The wife of missing journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda and activist, Sandya Ekneligoda has written a letter to the President Maithripala Sirisena requesting not to grant a presidential pardon to extremist Buddhist monk Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, who is serving a 6-year prison sentence for contempt of court.

The activist also handed over a letter to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice stating her opposition to a presidential pardon to the controversial monk.

Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal last August sentenced the extremist Buddhist monk and leader of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organization to six years rigorous imprisonment for contempt of court.

The Thero was convicted over statements he made and offensive behavior in the Homagama Magistrate court following the hearing of the habeas corpus case with regard to the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda in January 2016.

Mrs. Ekneligoda in her letter to the President points out that since the contempt of court charge was related to the case of her husband's disappearance, pardoning the Thero would exert undue influence on the case and other related cases.
