JVP to field candidate at presidential polls

The JVP will field a candidate if a presidential election is called, says its politburo member K.D. Lalkantha.

He has told Ravaya that that would be done failing their maximum efforts to see that the executive presidency was abolished.

It seems practically unlikely that the 20th amendment to the constitution, introduced by the JVP, would be passed.
Lalkantha said the basis of the amendment would be the expansion of democracy.

He went onto say that the next presidential polls would require a representative of the forces opposed to Maithripala Sirisena, Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mahinda Rajapaksa.

If that is done, that candidate will be the only common candidate at the election, he added.
